Abi-Haus | Abilene, Tx

Food is one of the biggest highlights of our trip to Marfa. The delicious food and amazing hospitality made Abi-Haus the most memorable of all.

When we first started planning our trip to Marfa, someone happened to mention that we would be passing through Abilene.  As soon as I heard “Abilene,” I knew we had to stop by Abi-Haus. I knew nothing about the restaurant except that Dana Tanamachi and Ryan Feerer’s chalk art adorned their walls. I just wanted to go see it!

We got to Abi-Haus around 5:50, not knowing they were not open til 6. I’m glad we got there a bit early, though, because we were really able to enjoy the exterior space of the restaurant.

There was already a small crowd by the time we got there but we were lucky enough to be the first ones to walk in. The interior is visually inspiring and so unique to this space. The chalk art is just as impeccable and as beautiful as I imagined it would be real life. What talents!

Literally studying the menu, it was difficult to choose because everything looks so delicious!

We settled on a Cheap n’ Cheesy, a side of Mac & Cheese, and a Farmer’s Plate.

While we were waiting for our food, we quickly spotted Jimbo, who was clearly the owner of the joint. We had never met him before and he was running around the restaurant, just as busy as the servers and bartenders, but we could just tell that this is his place, his house, and all the patrons are guests in his home. He came over and chatted with us for a bit - he is such a genuine guy who is so passionate about what he is doing, serving the Abilene community great dishes!

As our plates were delivered to the table as prepared, we knew it was going to be a great dinner.

Let me tell you, the Cheap n’ Cheesy is definitely cheap at $5 but the quality is top-dollar! The beef burger patty is cooked to perfection, with the slightest bit of pink in the middle, the cheddar cheese is slightly tangy and gooey, and I’ve never tasted such a deliciously toasted bun! The frites were fried perfectly and the pickles just as yummy, too. The burger also came with a side of their house made ketchup, which was so good and unlike anything I'd ever tasted!

The Farmer’s Plate, I could have licked the plate clean if it wasn’t inappropriate to do so in public! The dish was filled with buttered and toasted sourdough, 3 kinds of cheeses (goat cheese, bleu cheese, and brie) with assorted fruit. The best part was the honey hiding underneath all of the bread in the center. The combination of the tangy and creamy cheeses, the tartness of the fruit, and the sweetness of the honey was heavenly!

The Mac & Cheese was also so good! Jimbo came over and asked us, “Do you guys like spicy?” After we chimed, “yes,” he brought us some of their house made buffalo wing sauce.  He said that their Mac & Cheese with the sauce was his favorite 2am snack after a night of working the restaurant. It was indeed delicious! and I will indeed crave it at 2am!

I apologize that we don’t have a photo of the Mac & Cheese, but now you have another 1 out of millions of other reasons to come see it and taste all that Abi-Haus has to offer for yourself!

Road Trip to Marfa: Day 4, Unexpected.

After being out in the cold and windy weather for several hours on day 3 of our trip, I went to bed not feeling very well and woke up the next morning not that much better. Hoyoung also needed to take it slow and rest up for his jobs this weekend back home so on day 4, the Sprinkles took the car to check out Big Bend National Park and we stayed in Marfa.  

We took some more time to walk around the streets. Because day 3 had been so windy and cold, we thought yesterday would be even colder with the cloud cover. To our surprise, it was actually much better than the day before because there was very little wind and not as cold even without the sun. Unexpectedly, we were able to enjoy walking around and soak in the eclectic mix of architecture.

We checked out local shops, like Marfa Book Company.

The shop also had a small room with a podium and chairs set up for lectures and an unexpected and nice gallery space in the back corner.

After walking around, we were a little hungry so we stopped by Squeeze Marfa for a bite. We enjoyed the unexpected nice (and not windy) weather on their patio.

After lunch, we made our way towards Frama to get a cup of coffee. On the way, we saw this rooster, just chilling in the front yard. Unexpected, indeed!

Frama at Tumbleweed Laundry is so unique and charming, completely unexpected. You can do your laundry and grab coffee or ice cream or get on the internet or all of the above!

I also really wanted to visit the Marfa Public Library. It is a small place but you can tell it is such a big part of the community.

On our way back to El Cosmico, we snapped some photos of each other, too!

We absolutely loved our stay in Marfa and at El Cosmico. We can't wait to come back!

Road Trip to Marfa: Day 3 | Exploring the town.

Good morning, y'all!

For the past two mornings, Marfa has been cold and windy. Hoyoung woke up early yesterday and bearing the chill, he snapped some beautiful shots of El Cosmico.

After morning coffee and a light breakfast, we headed into town to have lunch at the Food Shark, a food truck serving delicious Mediterranean! They were not parked at their spot when we got there about 10 til noon so we walked around a bit, enjoying the architecture in the mostly empty streets and roads.

Soon enough, the Food Shark was parked and out of nowhere, people started to gravitate towards it like magnets. I was so hunched over the entire time I was standing in line because it was so cold and windy, but it was totally worth it.

Although we were the second ones in line, we still waited for about 20 minutes once we put our order in while they heated up the oil in the fryer for the falafels - excuse me, MARFAlafel. Hoyoung ordered the Marfalafel with hummus and I ordered a veggie burrito with mushrooms, squash, and guacamole off of their daily specials menu. We also ordered two extra falafels with hummus on the side.

It definitely was the best hummus I've ever had and the falafel was one of the best!

After lunch, we walked around some more but soon realized that Marfa is a VERY quiet little town - most of the establishments are open only certain days of the week OR certain months of the year. We were able to at least view the city from up high in the Presidio County Courthouse's cupola. We climbed several flights of stairs to get to the 360 degree panorama.

Some of the museums are by appointment only so we were not able to see much except for Donald Judd's concrete installations (part of the Chinati Foundation), which are available to view at any time during the day. There was plenty to see of that, though, so I wasn't disappointed.

We also saw the full panorama of the Artillery Sheds from afar and peeked in through the windows.

Afterwards, we came back to El Cosmico to rest up. I tried hanging out in one of the hammocks but it was just too windy to stay in it for very long.

After resting up and grilled burgers for dinner, we set out to the Marfa Lights Viewing Area. We left before sundown, hoping to be lucky enough to see the mysterious lights.

After sticking it out in the cold wind for about two hours, we had no such luck.  This is what I looked like the entire time we were there.

We left when someone told Jon he'd been coming to see the Marfa lights for 25 years and he's only seen it a total of 3 times. Yikes!

The views were beautiful though.
